THE ITEM OBITUARIES TUESDAY, OCTOBER 11,2011 NELL M. BARR COLUMBIA Nell Mason Barr, widow of the Rev. Canon John MacReadie Barr, died on Friday, Oct. 7, 2011. She was a 10- year resident at BARR South Carolina Episcopal Home at Still Hopes.
Born April 5, 1923, in Raleigh, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Robert Edward and Katie Dell Frenger Mason. She attended St. Mary's College in Raleigh. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, The Columbia Committee of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the state of South Carolina, and the Current Literature Club.
Mrs. Barr loved being a rector's wife and invested in her ministry with a passion and dedication rarely seen today. Not only was she active in both the Diocese of Upper South Carolina and National Episcopal Church Women, she was chosen as "Most Honored Woman" at the 87th convention of the ECW of Upper South Carolina. She was a founding member of St. Church, her late husband's last parish.
Her dedication to the ministry of the church sprang from her love for her Lord Jesus Christ. Community-minded, Mrs. Barr served.as an alumna-at-large of St. Mary's College and docent for the Historic Columbia Foundation. However, it was her tenure as the longest serving regional chair (30 years) for the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., that brought her the greatest fulfillment.
She served that role with joy, devotion, and timeless energy. Mrs. Barr's happiest place was with her family at Kanuga in the mountains of North Carolina. She and her husband began this annual summer tradition more than 30 years ago. Her zest for life and infectious smile will be missed by that community, especially during the week of the Renewal Conference, where she served many years as hostess.
Most importantly, however, is what she told members of her family the day she died. Just two hours earlier, she emphatically said, "When I die, the one thing I want people to John MacReadie Barr III (Laura Ramsay Barr) of Sumter; five grandchildren, Mrs. Michael Anthony Willis (Beverly Mason Moore) of Aiken, Mrs. Justin Stephens McMillan II (Anne Stuart Moore) of Columbia, Mrs. Graham Edward Bokinsky (Laura Ramsay Barr) of Columbia, MacReadie Morgan Barr of Washington, D.C., and David Mason Barr of Lookout Mountain, and eight great-grandchildren, James Sumter Sessoms, Jackson Elliott Sessoms, Mary Stephens McMillan, Caroline Mason McMillan, Graham Edward Bokinsky Robert Sims Bokinsky, Laura Ramsay Bokinsky and Elizabeth Wells Bokinsky.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Episcopal Church in Columbia. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the John Barr, Christian Life Center at St.
