The Online Course Review & Certification Program (OCRC)

Online@JSUhas developed the Online Course Review & Certification Program (OCRC). This process is intended to help faculty optimize the student learning experience in online courses and programs, modernize course design and navigation, improve student achievement, and increase instructor presence. Online@JSUregularly partners with instructors across JSU to offer faculty a breadth of presentation and workshop options. Topics range fromteaching and learning theory, online teaching strategies and techniques, best practices in online teaching and learning, multimedia, virtual classrooms, and building online and hybrid courses.

Certified Online Instructor (COI) Course

The COI begins each year during the Fall semester and ends at the conclusion of the following Spring semester. The course is intended for

  1. novices working with Canvas,
  2. instructors new to teaching online,
  3. instructors new to designing and building an online course, or
  4. experienced instructors looking to freshen up skills in building and teaching online.

The COI is offered once per year, with 30 seats available. Anyone at Jacksonville State can sign up for the course - full-time faculty, adjuncts, clinical faculty, staff, and graduate teaching assistants.

There are three parts of the course:

  • Part 1 - Canvas Basics
  • Part 2 - Best Practices in Teaching Online, and
  • Part 3 - Best Practices in Designing & Building an Online Course.

Course Capstone Project: To complete the COI, each student must complete the course capstone project - build or revise an online course and successfully pass the course course review.

The review rubric is grounded in widely accepted best practices in online course design and online course teaching.

Custom training for colleges, departments, or other faculty/staff groups of five or more is available through Online@JSU.

Sessions can be scheduled at an agreed-upon campus location. (We are currently offering sessions through Microsoft Teams.) The faculty or staff member scheduling training will be responsible for reserving lab space, reserving necessary AV equipment (computer, LCD projector, projection screen), and ensuring that the lab computers meet system requirements for training.

  • Course Review & Certification - How to complete a course review successfully
  • Digital Measures - accessing your account and uploading your information.
  • Watermark Course Evaluations & Surveys (CES) - how the process works and how to retrieve your student feedback evaluations/reports.
  • Honorlock and Turnitin - Honorlock (online test proctoring) and Turnitin plagiarism detection.
  • Canvas Studio - Everything about Studio
  • Teams (Microsoft Teams & Stream) - Teams basics, setting up a Teams meeting, accessing Stream, and retrieving archived video
  • Other/Special Topic - If you do not see a specific topic listed, you can submit a request and the request will be reviewed.

Time/Duration:

Each session will be scheduled for 45 to 60 minutes in length.

Delivery:

Each session will be delivered via Microsoft Teams or in 208 Self Hall. If you would like us to come to you, please let us know.

Process:

Please allow 48 hours from the time you submit a request until the time you receive a response. After a request is submitted, you will be contacted to discuss session details and to schedule the session.

Online@JSUnow has 35 webcams for students to reserve. Webcams can be checked out from the Multimedia Lab on the 6th floor in the Houston Cole Library.
