Indonesia eVOA, or Electronic Visa on Arrival is the online alternative to the regular Visa on Arrival obtained at the border upon arrival.

The online eVOA is identical in its conditions to the physical VOA. The main difference is that, with eVOA you can pay for your visa before you arrive. And, you don’t have to queue to pay the VOA fee at the border.

Understanding Indonesia eVOA.

eVOA validity

The eVOA is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. You must enter Indonesia before your eVOA expires, otherwise you would need a new visa.

The last day you can enter will be written on the eVOA. You will get 30 days of stay even if you enter on the last day of your eVOA validity.

Duration of stay

With eVOA, you are allowed to stay up to 30 days (without an extension) in Indonesia.

The day you enter Indonesia is considered Day 1. The last day you are allowed to stay in Indonesia is indicated by “Valid Until” on your “Stay Permit” sticker in your passport.

For example, if you enter on 01 Sep 2024, you must leave Indonesia on or before 30 Sep 2024.

Allowed number of entries

The Indonesia eVOA is single-entry only.

If you leave Indonesia, your eVOA becomes void and you would need another one to re-enter.

Allowed ports of entry

Using eVOA, you can enter Indonesia from almost any international airport, seaport, and land border checkpoint, including Bali and Jakarta. If you’re arriving in Indonesia on a commercial flight, chances are that eVOA will be accepted.

When to apply

The eVOA is issued immediately after you apply. There is no human verification in place and no risk of denial. You could even apply one hour before traveling.

Here is the summary of when to apply for your eVOA.

• Latest: 1 hour before traveling
• Earliest: 90 days before traveling

eVOA extension

You can extend the eVOA once for an additional 30 days.

The extended duration of stay is added to the original duration of stay. There is no harm in extending early. You will get 60 days in total.

For example, if you enter Indonesia with eVOA on 01 Sep 2024 and extend on 10 Sep 2024, you can stay in Indonesia until 30 Oct 2024.

It includes countries that are also visa-exempt – all ASEAN members plus Timor Leste. If you are from a visa-exempt country and want to stay longer than 30 days, it’s best to apply for eVOA or Tourist Visa (C1). This is because the visa exemption is not extendable but VOA, eVOA and tourist visas are.

Documents required

The following documents are required to apply for Indonesia eVOA online.

1. Passport ID page photo/scan
2. Digital face photo
3. Return or onward flight ticket

Passport ID page photo/scan

For eVOA, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of arrival.

The photo/scan of your passport ID page must meet the following requirements.

• It must be in focus, clear and not blurry
• Must not be obstructed, covered, cropped or folded
• Must be in landscape orientation (not portrait)

You have to upload your passport photo/scan twice within the application.

The first time, it must be a photo in JPG/PNG format. It won’t accept scanned copies. It must be a photo taken using your mobile phone or a camera.

The second time, it must be a PDF.

Digital face photo requirements

You must upload a photo of your face. The photo must meet the following requirements.

1. Must be a face photo, in color with a neutral expression
2. From the top of the head, including the hair, to the bottom of the chin should be around 50-60% of the photo’s total height.
3. From the bottom of the photo to the level of the eyes should be around 50-60% of the photo’s total height.

The digital photo file must meet the following requirements.

1. File format must be JPEG, JPG, or PNG only
2. File dimensions must be at least 400 by 600 pixels
3. File size should be no more than 2 MB

The system is not too strict with photo requirements as it’s automatic and not checked by a human. As long as your face is clearly visible, centered, and not too close or too far, it will be accepted.

Return or onward flight ticket

You must upload a copy of your return or onward flight ticket. This is not the flight ticket to enter Indonesia but to leave Indonesia.

You can submit any ticket as there is no human verification. But I recommend submitting your actual return or onward ticket as you may be asked to show it at immigration.

If you don’t have an onward ticket, you can use a service like Best Onward Ticket for your visa.

eVOA fee

The eVOA fee is 500,000 IDR but you will also pay a 19,500 IDR card processing fee. The total is 519,000 IDR or around 32 USD.

Processing time

The eVOA is processed instantly. It will be sent to your email right after you pay.

How to apply for e-VOA

There are 2 identical official government websites you can use to apply for the eVOA

1. Molina Imigrasi
2. eVisa Imigrasi

It’s up to you which one you use. If there are any problems with one of the websites, try the other.

For this article, I will use the first one – Molina Imigrasi.

Step 1: Go to Molina Imigrasi website and create an account. It will make extending much easier later.

Step 2: Start a new application by selecting your main purpose as “General, Family, or Social“, the sub-purpose as “Tourism, Family Visit and Transit” and finally visa type “B1 – Tourist (Visa on Arrival)“.

Step 3: Upload a scan of your passport and a face photo. These files must be JPG.

Step 4: Enter your personal information and intended address in Indonesia. Find and paste the Post Code of the first hotel you will stay at and the rest of the address will populate automatically. Then paste the entire address in the big box.

Step 5: On the same page you will have to upload your passport (yes, again) and a return ticket. These files must be PDF.

Step 6: Review the information. Sometimes the data automatically populated from your passport is incorrect. Manually correct any incorrect info.

Step 7: Follow the payment procedure.

If the payment process does not initiate, go to the eVOA website’s Home Page and click “Extend my Visa” which will bring you to the retrieve page. Enter your passport number, nationality, and date of birth. Your eVOA will show as “Pending” with a button to pay.

Note that if you don’t pay within 2 hours, your application will be void and you will have to apply again. This will not incur any fees.

Step 8: Receive the eVOA as an attachment in an email from “Direktorat Jenderal Imigrasi”.

eVOA Entry Procedure at the Border

When you arrive, head directly to Immigration.

Ignore the signs that point to “Visa on Arrival” or “VOA payment”. These signs are for the people who would pay and obtain VOA at the airport. You already have the eVOA!

Present your passport and eVOA to the immigration officer. You can carry a print of your eVOA but it’s not mandatory. Showing it on your phone is sufficient.

The officer may ask you how long you intend to stay in Indonesia and where you want to go. He may ask to see your return or onward ticket.

The onward ticket may be for a date that’s after the 30 days initially allowed by the eVOA. Immigration accepts flight tickets up to 60 days from the date of entry – just say you will extend the eVOA.

The officer will then stamp your passport with a “Stay Permit”. Take note of the date next to “Valid until”. This is the last day you can legally stay in Indonesia (unless you extend).

After you pass Immigration, collect your luggage and head to Customs. Make sure you have completed the online customs declaration as you’ll have to scan the QR code to proceed.

eVOA Extension Process

The simplest way to extend your eVOA is to scan the QR code at the bottom of the PDF file. This will bring up the retrieve or extend stay permit page.

Enter your passport number, nationality, and date of birth and the system will show your eVOA and an “Extend” button on the right side.

From here on, the process is straightforward. Fill in the necessary details (they may auto-populate), pay, and receive the eVOA extension file to your email.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between VOA and eVOA?

In the past, only the eVOA could be extended online, whereas the airport VOA had to be extended in person with 3 visits to the immigration department.

Indonesian Immigration has taken steps to make the two identical. Nowadays, both the eVOA and the VOA can be extended online, making them indistinguishable.

I cannot extend online. Why? What do I do?

There are multiple reasons, mostly due to the glitchy nature of the eVOA website. Some possible fixes include:

• Try again later
• Use VPN
• Use a different browser
• Use Incognito Window
• Use a different device
• Try both eVOA websites (Molina and eVisa)

As a last resort, if nothing seems to work, you can extend the eVOA in person by visiting the nearest Immigration Department.
