SHEILA ANN (TORTOLA) MACCORMICK - 71 YRS

We, the family of Sheila MacCormick, regret to announce her passing on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney. Born on April 29, 1951, in Sydney, Sheila was a daughter of the late Dominic and Josephine Tortola. Sheila is survived by her husband, J.C. MacCormick; son, J.J. McEachern (Denise); sisters, Marilyn (Leonard), Joanne (Bennie), Sally and brother, Darryl. Also left to mourn are two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; as well as several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Sheila was predeceased by her brother, Donnie. Visitation and memorial service to celebrate the life of Sheila MacCormick will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church St.), Whitney Pier on Sunday, February 5, 2023. A gathering of family and friends will take place from 12 noon to 2 p.m. with the memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Rev. Ritchie Robinson officiating. Interment will take place in Saint Andrews Cemetery, Framboise at a later date. Donations in memory of Sheila may be made to a charity of one’s choice. RUSSELL PATRICK MACLEAN - 91 YRS

It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of our treasured husband, father, poppy, brother, uncle and friend Russell MacLean, on Wednesday, February 1, 2023, at the age of 91. Russell passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Northside General Hospital. Born in North Sydney on June 22, 1931, he was a son of the late Norman and Mary (Young) MacLean. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney. Russell started working at the young age of 15, delivering coal alongside his older brother. He worked for Marine Atlantic for a number of years before eventually joining the laborer’s union, working on construction projects around the Cape Breton Municipality. Upon retirement, he enjoyed sitting on the bench in the North Sydney Mall, chatting with “the crew”, slooowly cruzing around the neighborhoods, checking on all his children’s houses. He spent his whole life tinkering with cars in the garage and there wasn’t a car question you could stump him on. Dad enjoyed Sunday drives with his “Agg”, going to church, out to restaurants and shopping for the deals. Most recently his favorites would be a McDonald’s Happy Meal and would never refuse a piece of warm apple pie. Russell is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Agnes (Jessome) MacLean; his children, the apples of his eye, Joe (Terry), Ann Long, Mary (Wayne) Beddow, Jude (Penny), Patrice (Lorne) Cantwell, Nancy (David) Cholock, Tracey, Sean (Melissa); and daughter-in-law, Judy; his grandchildren, Angie (Trent), Sherry (Derek), Michelle (Leo), Joey (Crystal), Laura (Tom), Danny, Shamus (ShaunnaLee), Eric (Trisha), Jillian (Shane), Kylie (Kyle), Alley (Trevor), Chad (Brianne), Jennine (Roger), Ryan (Jessica), Hannah (Jeremy); and his 23 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters; Hector, Theresa (Roddie) Bennett, Joey, Norma MacKinnon, Thomas “Buddy” (Mary); in-laws Ernie Fullom, Phyllis (Albert) Wilkie, Marguerite Jessome, Maureen (Dave) Bobbitt, Mary Rose (Eddy) Bennett, Beatie Jessome; also, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Along with his parents, Russell was predeceased by his son, Russell Jr.; special grand-daughter, Charmaine Cantwell; great-grandson ,Landen Seymour; brothers and sisters, Cyril (Siddy), George and Josephine Fullom; nephews, Trevor MacKinnon and Chris MacLean; son-in-law, Stan Long; parents-in-law, Gordon and Irene (McGee) Jessome; sisters-in-law Brenda, Kathleen and Patricia.,We would like to thank the doctors and nurses, 4W at Northside General Hospital, and Dr. McKeough and Louise McKeough.,Visitation will take place from 5 to 8 pm, Friday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. A funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. MARTHA DELORES MACQUEEN - 78 YRS

t is with heavy hearts that we the family of Martha Delores MacQueen regret to announce her passing on January 27, 2023, at St. Peter's Hospital, Albany, NY. She was born April 13, 1944, the eldest daughter of the late Philip and Florence MacQueen of Hillside Boularderie. She is survived by her children, Dawn Allee Watson and Michael Economides; brother, David MacQueen (Dorothy); sisters, Joan Richardson (Kevin), Rose Bell and Barbara Kennedy; grandchildren, Jamel, Danita Marie and Skyla Rome. Delores was predeceased by husbands, Donald Watson, and Christopher Economides; brothers-in-law, Leslie Mouland, James Kennedy and Loman Bell. Delores left home at an early age to find employment in the USA and spent her adult years in the Boston and New York area, where she worked and raised her family returning home on the rare occasion. Family holds many fond memories of growing up with Delores on a mixed dairy farm in Hillside. She enjoyed hayrides in the summer, sleigh rides in the harsh winters, the smell of fresh bread baking everyday, churning butter and curds setting on the stove. Delores was known for her hard work and dedication to the task turning her hand to all farm chores, hay making, gardening, milking cows, collecting eggs to name a few. The family would like to thank the staff Hudson Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Albany, NY for their care and dedication where Delores resided for the past year. JEAN CLAIRE (MACINNIS POTTER - 69 YRS

It is with the heaviest of hearts we announce that our wife, mother, grandmother, sister and best friend, Jean Claire Potter (1953 – 2023) passed away on February 1, 2023 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Jean is survived by her husband, Gardiner; sons, Aaron and Garth; daughter in-law, Silvia; her grandson, Oliver; sisters,Heather Johnston and Shirley Bennett; brother, David; as well as brothers in-law, Frank (Marion) Potter, Rob (Lisa) Potter; sisters in-law, Linda (Ronnie) Shaw and Colleen (Jon) Robins. When Jean wasn’t up in the Highlands camping with Gardiner and her little Moe, she was happiest at home surrounded by the ones she loved the most. Jean, the daughter of Wilbert and Lois (Spears) MacInnis, was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Jimmy; brothers’ in-law, Jerry Johnston, Jamie Potter and Andre Bennett; and her parents’ in-law, Frank and Rita Potter. We would like to thank Dr. Sheppard, the Cancer Center staff, the Palliative/Hospice Care team and VON for their expertise, kindness and compassion. ADA (RIDEOUT) TURNER - 99 YRS

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of my sister, Ada Turner (nee Rideout) on Monday, January 30, 2023, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Ada was born in Harbour Le Cou, NL, on October 5, 1923. She was a daughter of Theo and Irene Blanche Rideout. She came to Glace Bay at the age of 15 and lived the remainder of her life there. She is survived by her sister, Vera (Calvin) Collett, of Deer Lake, NL; a number of nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Madge Kennedy and the Turner family. Ada was predeceased by her parents, Theo and Irene; the love of her life, her husband, Johnny; her sister and brother-in-law, Marjorie and Stanley Butt and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Myrtle Rideout. She will be missed by her special friends, Louise McMullin, Gloria and Frank Chissam, Carol and John Newell and Brenda and Jackie McMullin and their families. Ada was a Worthy Mistress of the Order of the Eastern Star since 1955, Worthy Matron in 2001 and past Matron for 11 years, a 30 year volunteer with Townhouse and Taigh Na Mara, a member of the Glace Bay Hospital Ladies Auxiliary, a member of the United Church Women, a member of the Unified Board Epworth Church, UCW and Circle Unit Group at Epworth for many years. Ada spent her entire life helping others. Her sister, Vera, wishes to thank members and staff of Seaview Manor for taking such good care of her during her stay there. Also thank you to the friends who gave a helping hand to me on the passing of my sister. May God Bless You all. CHRISTINE (MACKINNON) VERHEYEN - 92 YRS

Christine Mary Verheyen, in her 92 year, of 91 Campbell Street, Trenton, died Monday, January 30, 2023, at Quinte Hospice, Quinte West. Born in Beaver Cove, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, June 26, 1931, was a daughter of the late John A and Maria (MacNeil) MacKinnon. She was a retired custodian from Trenton High School. She was a member of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, the Legion of Mary, CWL, and Ladies of Columbus. She was predeceased by her husband, Matheus T, “Dutchie” Verheyen; son, Matheus T, “Teddy” Verheyen; brothers, John Anthony, John Huey and a sister, Margaret and by fourth brother in infancy. She is survived by her children: Annemieke Loft (Jim), Bernadina Lavers (Jim), John (Kim), Chris (Patti), Neil A, Martina Hart (Lane) and Michael (Natasha). She is survived by her sisters Amelda, Ann and brother Jim of Cape Breton and brother Michael (Eileen) of Toronto. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and brother-in-law Benny (Betty) and sister-in-law Nita and many nieces and nephews across the world including the Netherlands. The late Christine will have visitation Thursday, February 2, 2023, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Rushnell Funeral Home, 60 Division St., Trenton, Ont. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, February 3, 2023, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church, Trenton with Father Tim Harrison officiating.
