Baldur's Gate 3: How To Beat Gerringothe Thorm Without Fighting (2024)

Instead of participating in a gruesome boss fight, you can opt to beat Gerringothe Thorm in Baldur’s Gate 3 without battling her. Gerringothe is one of the three Thorm members who ruled Reithwin Town, along with Malus Thorm in the House of Healing and Thisobald Thorm in The Waning Moon. She is the Tollmaster in charge of the Tollhouse that leads to the Moonrise Towers in BG3.

Gerringothe Thorm has an unending greed for gold. The entire Tollhouse is an extensive repository of gold, so clearing it out is great if you need some extra money. You can battle with the boss and her skull minions or make Gerringothe Thorm kill herself by following the correct options made available throughout the interaction.

Pay Her A Gold Coin

Baldur's Gate 3: How To Beat Gerringothe Thorm Without Fighting (2)

To trigger Gerringothe Thorm’s death without battling her, you will need to approach her in the Tollhouse, which will automatically initiate dialogue. She will demand that you give her a gold coin. After you do this, she will insist that she needs more gold in Baldur's Gate 3.

You can try to ask more questions about it, but she will simply not have her fill – you can continue giving her gold coins until you run out of money. To avoid this, players must toss her at least one gold coin to enter the next dialogue phase.

If you offer over 5,000 Gold, she'll give you the 'Signed Trade Visa' and leave you alone. This is a one-time-use scroll that casts 'Flesh to Gold,' turning a creature into solid gold after three turns. However, it isn't worth the gold it takes to obtain, as she drops this rare item in Baldur's Gate 3 upon self-destructing.

Pass Charisma Checks

After this, you will have two distinct options for skill checks, as shown by Gamerpillar, which you can choose depending on your proficiencies. Succeeding any of these will eventually lead her to kill herself, both of which require a Charisma Check. These rolls are high, so saving before rolling can be helpful if luck with the die fails:

Skill Check

DC Roll

Dialogue Choices

Persuasion

18

'Why stay in this rotted building? Take your gold and be free'. Gerringothe Thorm is firm about collecting the toll, requiring one of the following checks to be fulfilled.

Persuasion

21

'Says who? Seems to me there's no one here to oversee you.'

Deception

21

'Haven't you heard? The local authority has decreed the gold belongs to the toll collector - you.'

Intimidation

21

'Not anymore'.

Dialogue Choices

Deception

18

'I'm here to replace you as toll collector.' Gerringothe Thorm refuses to step down from her position, requiring one of the following checks to be fulfilled.

Deception

21

'You've been promoted! You'll collect gold from a much better tollhouse.'

Persuasion

21

'You've done a great job here. Really set the standard. But I'll take it from here.'

Intimidation

21

'You dare to question their decision? Leave this place at once!'

If your character’s Charisma is not too high, try using Astarion to roll. In addition, use Shadowheart’s Guidance to get an extra +1d4 to try and spice up your chances of being successful.

After successfully getting through these important dice rolls in Baldur's Gate 3, either through Persuasion or Deception, Gerringothe Thorm will be distraught and explode, returning the gold she has collected. Once Gerringothe has self-destructed, the surrounding Visages, represented by the floating skulls, will also die off, and the Tollhouse will be free to explore as she drops a special key.

Getting Gerringothe to kill herself is a smart strategy to avoid hard conflicts and spare some Short and Long Rests, which are much needed for the remainder of Act 2 in Baldur’s Gate 3.
